8 Year-Old Competitive League (8RC)
September 29, 2008
Starting at age 9, all West Jeff baseball players move into kid-pitch baseball. At age 8, there are two options for the kids depending on their skill level and interest in competitive baseball. Kids at 8 can either play one last year of machine pitch or they can try out for kid-pitch level of play (referred to as 8RC). At the 8RC level, the kids will begin playing teams from the broader Jefferson County and Denver Metro area They play a combination of home games and away games. It is very different than machine pitch where they only play other Evergreen-based teams.
Level of Commitment
At the 8RC level, there are approximately 20 games scheduled. Practice schedules will likely be more frequent due to the level of competition. It is a much more competitive league than the machine pitch league. Most teams down the hill start practicing regularly (1-2 times per week) soon after January 1st. The season officially starts April 1st and goes through the end of June. There are also many opportunities to participate in Metro area and State-wide tournaments.
Level of Play
8RC is very competitive and if Evergreen forms an 8RC team, this team will be competing with the best kids that the metro area has to offer. It is a big step up from machine pitch; the kids will be pitching to each other. At 8RC, kids are facing pitching from other kids and this can initially be intimidating to most 8 year-olds. The quality of play in the field is much better than most machine pitch teams and kids begin to face more rules that mirror big league ball (e.g. they can steal bases).
Tryouts
Tryouts will help determine if your child is ready to play at this level. Last year, we saw teams that were vey impressive at the 8RC level, and teams that definitely should have stayed at the machine pitch level one more year (i.e. didn't come close to winning a single game). We encourage anyone who has an interest in 8RC to try out. At the very least it is good practice and give the players and parents an idea of what tryouts are about. Potential 8 RC coaches with the guidance of the High School coaches will determine if there are enough players to form an 8RC team. If there is not, all players will play another year of machine pitch.
JCJBL
West Jeff Baseball is part of a larger area league called JCJBL (Jefferson County Junior Baseball League). JCJBL has significant oversight and organizational responsibility at the 8RC level - more information about the rules of play, and other great information can be found at www.jcjbl.org.
If you have questions regarding this league please contact your coach or tryouts@WJBASEBALL.ORG.
